ACTA-STEINBERG AWARD

Proud to share that SHEEPDOG has recently been named one of six finalists for this year’s Harold and Mimi Steinberg / American Theatre Critics Association 2020 New Play Award, recognizing playwrights for the best scripts that premiered professionally outside New York City during 2019.

With annual prizes totaling $40,000, Steinberg/ATCA is one of the largest national new play award programs.

ATCA began honoring new plays produced at regional theaters outside New York City in 1977. Plays receiving a production in New York City during the award cycle are not eligible for the Steinberg/ATCA award, recognizing the many other awards programs that award New York productions. The Steinberg/ATCA award has been funded by the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust since 2000.

The 2020 finalists were culled from 32 scripts submitted from productions that premiered in 13 states.

SHEEPDOG will be part of the Contemporary American Theater Festival’s 2020 summer season, alongside Chisa and some wonderful other writers. I’ll be working with director Melissa Crespo, who directed a short piece I wrote back in the day at the Public. So great to be reunited.

Spent a week recently in Chicago in the rehearsal room for the upcoming Chicago premiere of SHEEPDOG at Shattered Globe Theatre, directed by Wardell Julius Clark and starring Leslie Ann Sheppard and Drew Schad. Felt very inspired by the team Wardell has assembled.

New Dramatists! Class of 2026

New Dramatists, an artistic home and developmental laboratory for professional playwrights, is proud to announce the addition of seven writers to its illustrious, dynamic resident playwright company: Will Arbery, Kevin Artigue, Gracie Gardner, Dipika Guha, Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, Madhuri Shekar, and Ariel Stess. They will be in-residence through June, 2026. These adventurous theatre artists were selected by a seven-person committee of New Dramatists current residents, alumni, and outside theatre professionals from 398 applicants after undergoing a highly competitive, nine-month review and consensus-based decision-making process. New Dramatists kicks off their seven-year residencies with an evening of readings and celebration at the annual New Playwright Welcome in the fall.

About the Festival:

Created in 1998, the Pacific Playwrights Festival has grown into one of the leading festivals of new plays in the country and showcases some of the best new work on SCR’s radar. The festival offerings generate lively conversation, future world premieres and subsequent productions for numerous playwrights. Of the 131 plays presented in the first 20 years of PPF, nearly all have gone on to productions at SCR and/or other theatres nationwide.
